>> like a breath of fresh air! the fog is moved back in along the coastline. here comes the sea breeze. the temperatures are really going to be dropping off. boy, may get cool in spots for the weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. >> and in fact, chp already issued their own dense fog advisory around 3:30 this morning just one for the golden gate bridge plus the macarthur maze roadwork that's slowing folks down in these early- morning hours. >> okay. >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. donald sterling the embattled owner of the los angeles clippers is said to be battling prostate ncer. that's according to reports from the "new york post," espn and other news agencies. he got sympathy last night in oakland from basketball fans at the clippers-warriors play-offs game. >> you know, what went on, it's emotional, but, you know, i feel for the guy getting cancer. we are all people at the end of the day. >> it's never good when anybody has cancer. so it's really unfortunate but i hope he recovers from cancer and at the same time, realize

that is what he said was and his actions maybe weren't the best. >> earlier this week the nba permanently banned sterling from all league activities because of an audio recording of sterling making racist comments. but it's a more complicated process to make him sell the team. more on that from kpix 5's christin ayers. >> reporter: l.a. clippers only donald sterling leaves a beverly hills restaurant making a rare public appearance after he was caught on camera making a slew of racist comments. >> sterling, the majority of the owners want you to sell the franchise, will you sell? >> reporter: sterling had no comment even as the national basketball association upped the ante announcing after a meeting of its finance and advisory commission that it will pursue terminating his ownership. the committee unanimously agreed to move forward expeditiously. his ex-girlfriend appeared in public again wearing her signature advisor shielding her

face. her attorney announced that it was not stiviano who released the recording but a friend. the attorney said the conversation was recording legally in stiviano' condo. >> meanwhile the president of the naacp's los angeles chapter has resigned over a decision to give sterling an award for promoting civil rights. leon jenkins reversed that decision shortly after the scandal broke last weekend but critics say he should not have made that decision in the first place due to allegations of discrimination in sterling's past. 4:32 now. some developing news out of hawaii where the death of a woman out of santa rosa is now under investigation. 20-year-old patricia ravalisa died in a zipline accident in maui. she was an employee of the zipline company. she fell 150 feet. safety inspectors are at the scene to see what happened. in vallejo, a man had to pry open the jaws of a pit bull that bit his 3-year-old daughter on the head.

paramedics took the little girl to the hospital. people on the scene tell us she should be okay. the dog belonged to a neighbor, who is cooperating with police. animal control officers took the dog away. meanwhile, kpix 5's andria borba reports two dogs sent two people from brentwood to the hospital with some nasty looking injuries. >> reporter: brentwood police officers say these dogs caused these injuries which led to this confrontation. >> you want to see what they did to my wife? >> you know what? it's not a pit bull! >> i don't know what it is! i just got home myself! >> it's a mastiff -- >> i don't care what it is! >> know what? you don't even get in my face. you don't know at what it's doing to my daughter. those are like my grand doggies. >> reporter: it all began when two dogs got out and went on a rampage on hudson drive. >> these two giant dogs decided to make mine a snack. >> reporter: he put his dogs on top of a truck to try and fight off the other pair. >> one of the dogs went for my

finger. i pushed him off. the other one didn't like that. went to my leg, took my leg, took me down. >> reporter: then the dogs went after jeff wax's wife carolyn. >> one grabbed bobby and the other one went after her. so her instincts were to grab for her dog and try and save him. and the other one was biting on her legs. >> reporter: she needed stitches on her face, leg and possibly has a broken toe. brentwood pd captured one dog and pinned the other down in someone's backyard. >> screaming, trying to get out, hit him with the taser. >> reporter: attack tensions boiled over with cameras rolling. >> my wife was just coming out the front door to walk the dog and they attacked her and the dog! >> reporter: in brentwood, andria borba, kpix 5. >> both brentwood dogs will be held for a 10-day rabies quarantine. the results are grim but no surprise from this season's

final sierra snowpack survey. it is 18% of average for this time of year. the measure was taken in el dorado county. the snowpack is an essential part of california's water supply. it accounts for about one-third of the state's water. but we know it was a pretty grim winter. >> it was. now we're looking towards summer. we are going to have hot days ahead we have to conserve. next year, maybe we'll get it back. but we'll see what happens. not today. but we have that cooler temperature that is starting to swing onshore as the fog has made a return to the coastline. yeah, some thick fog setting up right now. isn't that nice to see the clouds rolling back in after a few hot days here with temperatures running well above the average? looks like this afternoon, we are going to start to cool things down. 60s toward the beaches. 70s in the bay. still some warm 80s showing up in the interior valleys. out the door we have some patchy fog into san francisco. the temperatures 40s and 50s to start out this morning. and by the afternoon, yeah, it's still going to be warm away from the coastline. but really dropping those

temperatures off 60s toward the beaches 73 in san francisco and about 84 in san jose. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thanks, lawrence. we'll go right out to the bay bridge. we know that's where a lot of people are heading this morning trying to get into san francisco. so far it looks okay. we are just seeing some slight delays in some of the far left lanes. macarthur maze roadwork connector roadwork is being cleared. westbound 580 to eastbound 80 connector, find out detours and live traffic maps at kpix.com. we have alternate information for you if you travel in the early-morning hours. a quick note in san jose, there is an accident on the connector ramp northbound 101 to northbound 280. full report on that coming up. back to you in the studio. right now firefighters in southern california have a wildfire about halfway contained. it's burning east of los angeles in the foothills of the san bernardino national forest.

the fire started on wednesday and forced more than 1,000 residents to evacuate. it burned about 1600 acres of brush. winds are expected to be relatively low today in the range of 5 to 10 miles an hour. federal investigators are looking into uc-berkeley and 54 other schools for the way they handle reports of sexual assaults on their campus. title ix investigation also covers such universities as prince as princeton, harvard and vanderbilt. one out of five women will be sexually assaulted before graduation. >> the president and vice president strongly call for greater transparency and a movement across the country for us to change campus culture so that we are making sure that all of our students are safe. >> uc-berkeley and other universitiesings say they are cooperating and committed to making improvements.

the bay area had a number of mostly peaceful rallies for may day. hundreds turned out in san jose, oakland and san francisco. in san jose, marchers started on the east side and walked to city hall to call attention to immigration reform. we talked to the woman who is a legal resident who watched her husband deported to mexico. she has five children. >> it's really hard to be here because we need to have two jobs especially for me, i'm a single mom. it's hard because i have to leave my kids when they was little. >> she says soaring house prices also make it a struggle. apparently the only arrest during may day protests happened in san francisco. a crowd blocked 16th and mission streets during the evening rush hour. police eventually made a few arrests and the crowd dispersed. today officials from 3 countries held a june, the news conference about their long- term plan to finding the missile malaysia airliner. as cbs news reporter susan

mcginnis reports, the meeting comes amid a new revelation that air traffic controllers wasted time the day that plane disappeared. reporter: nearly eight weeks into the search for missing malaysia airlines flight 370, officials from malaysia, australia and france are vowing to press ahead to find the plane. >> i'm quite confident that we are on the right track. >> reporter: while the search was called off this week from the air, authorities are expanding under water search. officials expressed doubts today that an unmanned u.s. navy submersible scanning the indian ocean would find any wreckage. >> i must say the chances of finding it i think the probability is lower than it was when we started the search. >> reporter: on thursday, malaysia officials released a preliminary report. the five-page document confirmed radar tracked the plane as it turned west but that air traffic controllers

did not realize the boeing 777 was missing until 17 minutes after it disappeared from civilian radar. >> all that will be investigated. >> reporter: families of the 239 missing passengers and crew members remain frustrated at the lack of progress after weeks of waiting in a hotel, they were advised thursday to go home. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> along with the report, officials from malaysia, australia and china plan to meet next week in their quest to get to the bottom of this mystery surrounding flight 370. what began as a peculiarity project may evolve into an even stranger business venture. this is a head shaker, folks. the so-called hookup truck is about ready to roll through the streets of the bay area. as the name implies it offers couples a unique place to have sex. once the truck's owner start charging people the service will cost between $75 and $150 per half hour. if you are wondering, it launches today in oakland. >> if i wasn't there, he would

fire. cell phone video capt the chaotic scene.. as the virginia investigators have ruled out speed as the cause of a train derailment and crude oil fire here. cell phone video captured the scene as the tanker burst into flames wednesday. 13 cars hauling crude oil derailed. the ntsb says the train was traveling about 24 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone. the train was carrying crude oil from bakken oilfields in north dakota. it has increased 20-fold since 2008. feds say it's more flammable than any other oil.

the increase of oil on the rails has prompted transportation officials to propose comprehensive safety measures to the white house. >> what you have is a proliferation of a new growth energy product in this country without a proliferation of inspectors, without a proliferation of in many cases the regime that needs to go along with making sure that everything is safe. >> the white house will review the safety proposal. approval could take months. heroin addiction has reached epidemic levels in many parts of the country. there's now a drug that's helping prevent overdoses. kpix 5 reporter linda yee explains why doctors want to give this drug to people to take home. reporter: it's a miracle drug. >> it makes me feel more safe. >> reporter: the trade name narcan is the antidote for heroin overdose. >> if i wasn't there, he would be dead for sure. >> reporter: daniel gave it to his brother who was overdosing during those critical minutes

while waiting for paramedics. heroin addict brad overdosed three days in a row. narcan saved him three times. >> like it was like exploded out of my body and i was in the walmart parking lot. i went through the whole situation looking down and i was like wait what's going on here? and then i could see the guy, you know, hitting me with the narcan. as soon as he did, i climbed back into my body and woke up and oh, my god what's going on here? >> reporter: opiate overdoses block signals from the brain to the lungs and breathing stops. narcan restores the signal. hospital emergency rooms and paramedics have used it to save lives for decades. now drug prevention programs are giving it to families and friends of opiate users just in case of an accidental overdose. police patrols around the country are starting to carry kits to help save lives. some say this just gives heroin users a free ride. >> i don't know. would you rather have them dead? >> reporter: san francisco is one of the first cities to give

the narcan antidote to heroin addicts. here in the haight, many young users were dying from overdoses. so this is where doctors saw the most dramatic turnaround from 150 deaths a year in 2002 to 10 deaths now. the san francisco public health department says the drug is not just for heroin addicts anymore. >> we are prescribing it for risky drugs. >> reporter: anyone taking prescription opiates like vicodin is at risk for overdose especially in households where children may accidentally swallow the painkillers. >> so to get naloxone into that child and get them breathing right away while you're waiting 10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive may be life-saving. >> reporter: so the push is to prescribe it along with the painkillers because household accidents now make up most of the fatal overdoses. in san francisco, linda yee, kpix 5. >> the fda recently approved a hand-held injector that makes

it easier for families to administer the narcan. the nasty storm that hit the country this week may be over. but the effects of the flooding remain including an unbelievable scene in maryland. watch this. incredible! just like that, a big sketch of road, this is in baltimore, is just gone along with all the cars parked on the road. despite the screams, no one was injured in the incident. more now from cbs news chip reid. >> reporter: people describe feeling a rumble and hearing what sounded like thunder. >> you can see slowly but surely it was sinking. sinking and sinking. >> reporter: as the ground collapsed, the wall structure and sidewalk caved with it swallowing trees, lampposts and parked cars. >> the wall, the lights, the cars, everything parked on that side of the street, gone. >> reporter: emergency crews evacuated 19 homes and inspected gas and power lines. drivers returned to their parked cars hoping to find them

where they had left them. some were lucky, others were not. the debris and chunks of caved road fell off the hill and on to the tracks of a nearby railway stopping train traffic in the area. but it's not known what caused the ground to cave in. officials say the harsh winter of heavy snows and rains contributed to weakening the roadways. how about that! two feet of rain in some places. >> unbelievable. >> and in florida they had five inches of rain. >> they have had a heck of a winter back there. you talk about all the snow and the thunderstorms and the tornadoes. well, we haven't had much of anything except a lot of sunshine lately but that's all about to change. we are going to see some much cooler air headed in our direction. in fact, beginning to see that fog moving in along the coastline. so if you have been looking forward to some cooler weather now, don't worry, it's on the way starting today. still be warm in spots away from the immediate coastline. but these temperatures definitely dropping off. yesterday they had some 80s and 90s upper 70s toward the coastline and half moon bay. today it will be much cooler

about 67 in half moon bay. about 84 still warm in san jose but that's 8 degrees cooler than yesterday. about 77 in oakland and 73 degrees in san francisco. so these temperatures going to start to take a dive and by this weekend maybe 20 to 25 degrees cooler. all right. your headline for today the fog is back, clear inland, mostly sunny skies. and some cooler temperatures for today. and then much cooler weather over the weekend. high pressure starting to slide eastward. you have this front that's encroaching on toward the bay area. that is going to ramp up that marine layer and that means more fog in our forecast and cooler temperatures. 90s in the central valley still hot there. as we look toward the computer models they are showing patchy fog in the morning hours should give way to sunshine in the afternoon in most spots and then tonight here comes that fog again. going to see plenty of it. in fact, it's going to surge well onshore by tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 80s still in the south bay. only 60s toward the coastline. you will see a lot of 80s inland. then as you get inside the bay we're keeping you in the 70s for the most part although 60s into daly city. next couple of days we cool down the temperatures back to normal even a slight chance of

showers north of the golden gate bridge on monday then we warm things back up slowly toward the middle of next weeks. let's check the roads with elizabeth. and we are going right back out to the macarthur maze. so you may know they are doing this major paving project. they have had to close some connector ramps overnight. they are going to be doing this for the next several weeks. so we talked to them again this morning. and it's running a little late, the clearing process. so it sounds like that westbound 580 to 80 connector may still be closed until approximately 5:00 this morning. so wait this one out. it's a little extra longer, but it looks like they are in the process now beginning to pick up the cones. earlier this week, they actually cleared it before we went on the air at 4:30. we have one dense fog advisory issued by the chp for the golden gate bridge so a north/south bridge so heads up there crossing from marin county into san francisco or the other direction. taillights in oakland moving

northbound near the oakland coliseum. everything is quiet so far into your downtown oakland exits. slight delays at the bay bridge, no slowdowns in either direction 80 both directions between oakland and san francisco. remember kcbs when you hit the roads at 106.9 fm or 740-am. back to you. >> thank you. 4:51 now. new this morning, a northern california man is finally back home after surviving last month's deadly avalanche on mount everest. his family was there to greet 68-year-old jim geiger as he arrived in sacramento. he was ready to go for the summit on mount everest april 16 when that avalanche hit killing 16 sherpas. >> i was there in base camp. it happened at 6:30 in the morning. we heard the rumbling. all of a sudden got the news about 7:00 that 12 people were lost. some missing and then all of a sudden it went up to 16.

very, very sad. >> 68-year-old geiger says it was frightening to see rescue teams removing the victims off the mountain. he was hoping to become the oldest american to summit the mountain but obviously had to turn around. it is 4:52 on your friday. a driver takes safety matters into his own hands. how his device for jamming cell service backfired. >> and a senior prank gets out of hand. what students did that led to more than 60 arrests. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

around the bay the fog rushed to the coastline and that means much cooler temperatures along the coast just inside the bay but warming up away from the water's edge. you will see 81 degrees in mountain view. temperatures heating up mid-80s in toward san jose and campbell and even upper 80s toward

gilroy and morgan hill. but these numbers down. we're done with the 90s for now. much cooler weather expected for the weekend, too. into the east bay lots of 80s popping up mostly sunny this afternoon but cooler temperatures. inside the bay the sea breeze keeps you down to 75 in berkeley and cooler in the north bay as well about 79 degrees in santa rosa, 77 in petaluma. into san francisco, that sea breeze is blowing. about 73 degrees this afternoon. if you want to ditch your car use mass transit instead, everything is looking good. bart systemwide on time. in fact, they have 32 trains all reporting no delay. full look at "kcbs traffic" is coming up. new this morning, a driver in florida faces a big fine for jamming cell phone signals. jason humphries admitted he used the device on his daily commute for two years. a cell phone company noticed something scrambling the signal on its towers. it tracked the problem to humphries' giant jammer wedged into his suv. he said he wanted to stop drivers around him from talking on the phone.

the fcc has fined him $48,000. 62 students all hauled away off to jail because of a high school prank. the students in teaneck, new jersey, rounded up handcuffed hauled away in vans. police arrived to find the school trashed. students urinated in hallways, painted graffiti on the walls, even taped hot dogs to lockers. many left the police station in tears dodging the cameras. >> i know he thought it was fun and games but it's real life. it's not fun and games. >> it's a yearly prank that's done. the police should not have arrested all these kids. >> some students faced a judge in their school sweatshirts. 24 of the students who were over 18 years old or 18 were charged with burglary and criminal mischief. the school is considering other punishment. it's 4:56. two dogs went on a rampage through an east bay neighborhood injuring two people and dividing neighbors. we were there when one confrontation with a victim got heated. >> reporter: and the warriors advance to game 7. but a lot of talk is about what's going on
